Tennis with the Stars

Head Coach Marc Lewis was invited to play some tennis with 2016 Olympic Gold Medal Tennis Winner Monica Puig and Queens Club Champion Feliciano Lopez in the build up to Wimbledon. The day was a promotional Event for Ellesse Clothing who have Feliciano and Monica as their World Ambassadors.

Marc was asked to bring down a variety of ages and standard of players from the Drive Tennis Club to  play, have lunch and do some filming with the professional players.

A great day was had by all with Marc playing some of his famous squad drills like ‘Scramble’ and  Feliciano and Monica were highly impressed with the drills and the challenge was on!!

Marc says ‘ In this age of understandable security it was incredible for The Drive Members to get up close and personal for 5 hours with two fantastic players. The previous week Feliciano(or Feli as he likes us to call him) beat Dimitrov, Wawrinka and Cilic to win Queens Club and Monica shot to fame with her incredible Single Gold Medal at the Olympics. When they joined in scramble was fantastic and my players were hitting great and holding their own which kept things intense but fun. It was a pleasure to be involved  and an incredible day was had by all.’

South Africa Football Captain Dean Furman Visits The Drive

South African Football Captain and ex Chelsea Football Club midfielder Dean Furman came to the UK for a few days ad could not resist popping into The Drive Tennis Club for a lesson with Head Coach Marc Lewis.

Marc coached Dean from an early age through to being a top nationally ranked tennis player and is full of praise for his former protégé.

‘I have been fortunate enough to have known Dean for nearly 25 years!! He was a pleasure to coach and an amazingly gifted player. We have stayed in contact and I have followed his football career with great pride. Despite his talent he strives to reach the next level of excellence which is a fantastic character trait. It is always a pleasure to receive a WhatsApp from Dean to say he will be in the UK and to have a lesson. Unfortunately he seems to be getting faster and me slower!!’

Dean says of Marc

‘Marc is such a dynamic coach. He has worked with top players but still relishes the challenge of coaching any level player. I have been so impressed with how Marc has evolved The Drive Tennis Club into such a vibrant club with so much quality adult training. I hope that when I finally return to the UK to have regular training with Marc and be part of his squads which are innovative, fun and stimulating.

Here is a video of today’s lesson Dean and his brother Jake(a current Drive LTC member) who encouraged Marc to set up a Young Professionals Elite Training Squad which now has over 30 players aged 18-35 who regularly attend on a Wednesday night.

Finals Day – Final Observations

Finals day this year was my first as Chairman. I’m told that the sun doesn’t always shine like it did this year, but there is no doubt that a lovely, not too hot day helped make our finals a success.

A number of people present, both old hands and newer members told me how lovely it was to meet new people, sit in the sun, watch great tennis and have a lovely lunch.

This year, it was particularly noticeable that 5 or 6 of the winners were new to the honours board and that is a real reflection on the changing face of the club and one that we all welcome.

The quality of the tennis, from our juniors through to the Vets was of a very high standard and a great day was had by all.

Thanks to Steve Parnell for organising all the draws and dealing with the endless requests as we approached the end. Also, thank you to all the people that helped before during and after.
